Attorneys Dave Baxter and Trey Ferguson presented a session at the North Carolina Public Risk Management Association’s (NC PRIMA) Educational Conference on September 12, 2023. Dave and Trey’s session was on claims against local governments brought under the North Carolina Constitution’s “fruit of their own labor” clause. The session addressed how the North Carolina courts deal with these types of claims, and outlined several recent appellate decisions addressing the clause. Because of Sumrell Sugg’s experience as municipal and litigation attorneys, Dave and Trey were able to provide a unique insight, from both a general counsel perspective and litigation perspective for local governments assessing risk in the areas of public employment and business regulation.
