Local Government
Sumrell Sugg’s Local Government Practice Group’s representation of counties and municipalities is comprehensive. This Practice Group generally consists of facilitating regular ongoing governmental activities, including zoning, subdivision and land development, infrastructure development, enactment of ordinances and resolutions, annexations, environmental issues, employment and personnel issues, governmental pension plans, and interaction and agreements with other governmental entities.
In addition, members of the firm provide litigation defense to counties and municipalities, often through the particular unit of local government’s insurance carrier having coverage for claims involving challenges to annexation, zoning and subdivision regulation, civil rights matters, employment discrimination claims, motor vehicle accidents, general tort claims, and contract and development matters.
Law Enforcement
Sumrell Sugg recognizes that law enforcement agencies often face unique legal issues, and has been privileged to represent law enforcement agencies in civil suits in state and federal courts, as well as providing legal training to officers throughout the state.
Additionally, the firm provides very specialized advice on employment law and workers compensation as they apply to the law enforcement community, as well as working with departments to develop Standard Operating Procedures and personnel policies.
Since 1997, Sumrell Sugg partner Scott Hart has been the Police Legal Advisor to the New Bern Police Department, and has been invited to speak to and train department personnel in a number of other departments throughout the state.
