Arey W. Grady, III
Mr. Grady’s practice areas focus on estate planning and
administration including service in various fiduciary (personal
representative, trustee, attorney in fact, etc.) capacities,
residential and commercial real estate transactions, municipal and
local government law including representation of counties, cities,
authorities, public hospitals and other local governments, general
business and transactional law, economic development law and related
civil litigation in all areas. Mr. Grady handles a variety of
business and real estate transactions, and routinely represents clients
in complex transactions involving local, national and international
lenders and parties. Moreover, Mr. Grady routinely represents
local governments in a variety of transactional, litigation and
governance issues. Finally, Mr. Grady has years of experience
representing private individual and corporate clients in government
affairs, including the representation of individual and private
entities before local and state governmental bodies. A sample of

Background and Education
Mr. Grady was born in Kinston, North Carolina, on December 25,
1972, and subsequently lived in Snow Hill, North Carolina, on his
family’s farm until adulthood. Mr. Grady attended Arendell
Parrott Academy in Kinston from elementary school through his
graduation from high school. Mr. Grady was admitted to the North
Carolina bar in 1998, after his graduation with honors from the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Law that same
year. Mr. Grady also attended UNC-CH as an undergraduate, where
he received a B.A. with distinction in 1995, majoring in industrial
relations with a minor in business administration. While
attending Parrott Academy and UNC-CH as an undergraduate and while in
law school, Mr. Grady was engaged in numerous community and educational
activities, including: • election as student body president in his senior year at Parrott Academy • receipt of the Eagle Scout award • recognition as valedictorian of his class upon graduation from Parrott Academy •
membership on the UNC-CH Undergraduate Honor Court from 1992 to
1995, with service as Vice Chairman from 1994 to 1995 •
participation in the North Carolina Journal of International Law
and Commercial Regulation from 1996 to 1998 as an Articles Editor and a
Staff Member • membership in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, where he served as social chair and vice-president
Professional and Community Service
Since
his admission to the North Carolina Bar, Mr. Grady has participated in
numerous professional and civic activities, including: • membership in the North Carolina Bar Association since 1998 •
service as a Director for East Carolina Behavioral Health
(formerly known as Neuse Center Area Authority for Mental Health,
Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services) since 2002 •
selection as Chairman of the North Carolina Bar Association
Estate Planning Council’s Pro Bono Committee from 2003-2005 •
membership in the New Bern Breakfast Rotary Club since 1999,
where he served as Program Chairman from 2002 to 2003, Secretary from
2003 to 2004 and President from 2004 to 2005 • appointment to the Board of Directors of the UNC School of Law Alumni Association from 2005 to the present •
appointment to the Board of Directors of the N.C. Council of
Community Programs (the statewide advocacy group for local government
MH/DD/SA service providers) from 2005 to present • participation in the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Craven Program •
service on the Board of Directors of Craven County Smart Start,
Inc. since 2004, where he has served on the executive committee since
2006 and will serve as vice-chairman during 2008-2009 • membership on the Craven County Board of Realtors from 1999 to the present
